The History of United States Sports Betting

Early America & Horse Racing

America’s first horse track was built on Long Island in 1665, when the country’s population hovered around 90,000. America’s famous revolution was funded in large part through lottery sweepstakes. By the time of the Civil War, all three legs of horse racing’s Triple Crown were active — the longest-running professional sporting event in the country today.

"Say It Ain't So, Joe"

The 1919 Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the Chicago White Sox intentionally lost the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a betting scheme, led to permanent bans and a black mark on US sports betting. Lawmakers moved to outlaw all forms of wagering. For about twenty years, there was no legal way to bet anywhere in the country.

PASPA & The Modern Era

Laws like the Federal Wire Act (1961), PASPA (1992), and UIGEA (2006) tightened restrictions. But in 2018, the US Supreme Court struck down PASPA after New Jersey challenged it. Within six months, seven states legalized sports betting. By 2024, 31 states and DC offered legal online sportsbooks — and the number keeps growing.

Mobile Betting & Sportsbook Apps in the United States

The rise of mobile sports betting has transformed the industry. Over 80% of all legal wagers in the US are now placed via smartphone apps — here’s everything you need to know.

Native iOS & Android Apps

Every major US sportsbook offers dedicated apps optimized for mobile betting. Download directly from the App Store or Google Play — no sideloading required in regulated states.

Geolocation Technology

All legal mobile sportsbooks use geofencing to verify you’re within state lines. Your device’s GPS confirms your location before allowing any wager — a legal requirement in every regulated state.

Live In-Play Mobile Betting

Bet on games as they happen from anywhere in your state. Mobile live betting offers real-time odds updates, one-tap wagers, and instant cash-out options during the action.

Secure Mobile Transactions

Mobile deposits and withdrawals use bank-level encryption (256-bit SSL). Fund your account instantly via Apple Pay, PayPal, or debit card — withdrawals typically process within 24-48 hours.

Biometric Login

Leading sportsbook apps support Face ID and fingerprint authentication for fast, secure access. Set deposit limits, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion tools directly from the app.

Mobile-First Promotions

Many sportsbooks offer mobile-exclusive bonuses and odds boosts. DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM regularly push app-only promotions that aren’t available on desktop.

Banking Options for US Sportsbooks

Even with different state regulations, banking options at legal sportsbooks are relatively uniform. Here’s a complete breakdown of every deposit and withdrawal method available.

Instant Free

Credit & Debit Cards

The most popular way to fund a sports betting account. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover are widely accepted. Some banks may decline gambling transactions or apply cash advance fees — check with your bank first.

💡 Tip: Debit cards are generally more reliable than credit cards for sportsbook deposits.
Instant Free

eWallets (PayPal, Skrill, Venmo)

eWallets act like paying with a bank account or debit card. PayPal is the most widely accepted digital wallet at US sportsbooks. The transfer is immediate and easy from any device.

💡 Tip: PayPal offers one of the fastest withdrawal times — often under 24 hours.
1-3 days Free

Bank / ACH Transfer

Online bill pay through your bank is the safest method since you never share your account number with the sportsbook. Set it up from your bank’s website or app. Processing takes longer but limits are typically higher.

💡 Tip: Best for high-volume bettors who need larger deposit and withdrawal limits.
Instant $0-4

PayNearMe (Cash Deposits)

Almost every state allows PayNearMe kiosks to transfer cash to your sportsbook account. Located inside 7-Eleven, CVS, and other convenience stores. Get a barcode from the app, scan at the register, and funds appear instantly.

💡 Tip: Great for bettors who prefer using cash and don't want to link a bank account.
Instant Free

Prepaid Cards (Play+)

Select sportsbooks offer branded prepaid cards that work like a debit card. Load funds, wager, and withdraw directly to the card. It’s a safe and immediate way to manage your bankroll separately.

💡 Tip: Play+ cards are available at DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM among others.
Instant Free

Cash at Casino Cage

Some online sportsbooks partner with land-based casinos to accept cash deposits at physical casino cages. For example, BetMGM customers can fund their accounts at MGM-affiliated casino properties.

💡 Tip: Withdrawals at the cage aren't always available — check your sportsbook's policies.
Getting Started

How to Start Sports Betting in the United States

New to sports betting? Follow this step-by-step guide to go from zero to your first legal wager in under 10 minutes.

01

Check Your State's Laws

Sports betting is legal in 38+ states, but regulations vary. Use our state guides to confirm that online and/or retail sports betting is available where you live. You must be physically located within a legal state to place a wager.

02

Choose a Licensed Sportsbook

Only bet with sportsbooks licensed by your state’s gaming commission. Our reviews cover every licensed operator — DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, and more. Look for competitive odds, a strong mobile app, and a welcome bonus that fits your style.

03

Create Your Account & Verify Identity

Sign up with your name, email, date of birth, and last four digits of your SSN. State regulations require identity verification (KYC) to prevent fraud and underage gambling. This process typically takes under 5 minutes.

04

Claim Your Welcome Bonus

Most sportsbooks offer a first-bet bonus — up to $1,500 at some books. Read the terms carefully: some offer risk-free first bets, others provide deposit matches or bonus bet credits. Use our comparison tables to find the best current offer.

05

Fund Your Account & Place Your First Bet

Deposit using credit/debit card, PayPal, bank transfer, or cash at a retail location. Start with straight bets (moneyline, spread, or total) before exploring parlays and props. Set a budget, use responsible gambling tools, and enjoy the action.

Common Questions

FAQ for United States Sports Betting

It depends on where you live. Federal law no longer prohibits states from setting their own sports betting laws. Every state approaches the subject differently. If you live in a state where sports wagering is legal, you’re entitled to place sports bets. See our state-by-state guides for specifics.

Yes. Bonuses and promotions are a standard part of the legal and regulated US sports betting market. They’re how competing sportsbooks set their services apart and attract new customers. However, terms and conditions differ from what was available in the unregulated offshore marketplace.

Yes. All winnings from US sports betting must be declared on your income tax return. The federal government taxes sports betting income at a flat 25% rate. State income tax rates vary by state.

Every state has different laws, but the industry standard is 21 years old for sports betting. You also need to be physically inside the state where you place bets. The legal age for pari-mutuel wagering (horse racing) is typically 18, but varies by state.

If you’re betting with a legal and regulated sportsbook, online wagering is extremely safe. All regulated US sports betting is subject to strict oversight, with clear dispute resolution procedures. Most legal sportsbooks employ advanced encryption technology. If you bet with unregulated offshore bookmakers, those protections cannot be guaranteed.

Most legal sportsbooks accept credit/debit cards, bank transfers, eWallets (PayPal, Skrill), online bill pay, PayNearMe cash deposits, and prepaid cards. Online bill pay is generally the fastest and safest method since you never share your account number. Each sportsbook has its own deposit minimums, maximums, and processing times.
